Lip Augmentation with Restylane

The Restylane family of products is biotechnoligically-derived dermal fillers with well-defined safety profiles that help restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Since it was launched in 1996, Restylane has been used in more than 70 countries and is the most-studied aesthetic dermal filler family in history, with dozens of publications in the medical literature.  It was approved in the United States in December 2003 and has been used in over 1.4 million treatments in the United States alone.  Perlane received approval for use in the United States in May 2007.  It has been approved outside the United States since 2000.  In January 2010, Restylane-L and Perlane-L received approval for use in the United States.  By combining lidocaine with Restylane and Perlane, Restylane-L and Perlane-L injectable gels help reduce discomfort after treatment.

The Science Behind the Innovation

The Restylane family of products are composed of hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body.  The Restylane family of products is free of animal proteins.  This limits the risk of animal-based disease transmissions or develpment of allergic reactions to animal proteins.  Restylane products contain trace amounts of gram-positive proteins and are not to be used by patients with a history of allergies to such material.  Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by patients with hypersensitivty to local anesthetics of the amide type, such as lidocaine.

The crystal-clear, biodegradable gel is injected into the dermis in small amounts with a fine needle.  The result is virtually instantaneous, producing a natural-looking enhancement.  While the Restylane family of products are made by the same biotechnical process, there is a difference in the gel particle size.  Perlane and Perlane-L have a larger mean particle size and are appropriate for deeper injections.

Indications

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane, Restylane-L, Perlane, and Perlane-L.  These products are indicated for individual use in the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.  Restylane and Restylane-L are indicated for mid-to-deep dermal implantation.  Perlane and Perlane-L are indicated for implantation into the deep dermis to superficial subcutis.

Important Safety Information for Restylane family of products

Products in the Restylane family contain trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial protein and are contraindicated for patients with allergies to such material or in patients with severe allergies that have required in-hospital treatment.  Patients with bleeding disorders should not use products in the Restylane family.  These products should not be injected anywhere except the skin or just under the skin.  Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type, such as lidocaine.

Use of products in the Restylane family at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete.  The most commonly observed side effects are swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness at the injection site, which typically resolve in seven days.  Do not implant the products into blood vessels.  Serious but rare side effects include delayed onset infections, recurrence of herpetic eruptions, and superficial necrosis at the site of injection.  Use with caution in patients recently treated with anticoagulant or platelet inhibitors to avoid bleeding and bruising.  Safety has not been established for use during pregnancy, when brestfeeding, or in patients under 18 years.

Patients should be limited to 6.0 mL per treatment.  The safety or effectiveness of products in the Restylane family for the treatment of anatomic regions other than nasolabial folds have not been established in controlled clinical studies.
